Fluid | Preserved

Each image in this series holds an entire passage of choreography in a single frame. Over several months I photographed dancers performing complete passages from a body of work, taking one exposure every thirty seconds from start to finish. I handled each frame as a transparency, removed its background, and laid it over the others, sometimes hundreds at a time, on an empty ground.

Where a dancer passes through once, they stay legible: a face, a raised hand, a single foot on the floor. Where the dancers return again and again, the frames pile up into dense, dark masses that read almost like heat. The edges hold moments, and the centre holds duration. Each image is a map of where the dance spent its time.
